Deleted b-files

If a deleted sequence had a b-file, that must be deleted also, or it will cause problems when the A-number is recycled. To delete a b-file, contact David Applegate, Russ Cox, Charles R Greathouse IV, or N. J. A. Sloane.

Importance of b-file deletion

Deleting a link to a b-file without deletion of the b-file automatically generates a problem. In this case the system shows a link

 Table of n, a(n) for n = 1..1234

without an author's name. When the link is clicked, the system should normally synthesize a b-file from the sequence entry and show a corresponding comment in the header of the response page:

Instead, the system currently shows the previously stored, outdated b-file if that was not deleted on the server.

Normally such a response does not contain the "synthesized" comment header.

The experienced user could, from the combination of missing author's name and "synthesized" header, conclude that the b-file is outdated, but -

There were even cases were users had not deleted the "synthesized" comment header before uploading a modified b-file.

This complicated explanation reduces to the fact that it is very important that orphaned b-files are deleted by a system administrator. To avoid any confusion, outdated a-files should be deleted also.
