Wikis are websites which enable real-time collaboration on writing and editing web pages, which are stored in a database with a complete revision history. The most popular wiki software is the MediaWiki platform, best known for Wikipedia which runs on it. ("Wiki" is a Hawaiian word meaning "fast" or "quick.")

Ward Cunningham, the developer of the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work."[1]
