Brian Hayes is a science writer interested in mathematics and computation. He writes the "Computing Science" column for American Scientist magazine and produces the web site bit-player.org. In years past he was the editor of American Scientist, and before that was Associate Editor of Scientific American. He is the author of Infrastructure (W. W. Norton, 2005) and Group Theory in the Bedroom and Other Mathematical Diversions (Hill and Wang, 2008).
