  • December 31, 1830 King Louis-Phillipe dissolves the Artillery of the National Guard. (This later leads to Évariste Galois being arrested on at least two separate occasions).
  • December 31, 1894 Thomas Jan Stieltjes dies in Toulouse, France.
  • December 31, 1917 Comptes Rendus publishes letters from Gaston Julia and Georges Humbert claiming that Julia had priority regarding a result on a topic of iteration for which Pierre Joseph Louis Fatou had also claimed credit.
