- August 10, 1548 In Milan, Lodovico Ferrari and Nicolo Tartaglia engage in a mathematical "duel"on the topic of quartic equations, refereed by the governor of Milan. Tartaglia appears to be losing, so he departs without telling anyone, but the referee declares Ferrari winner by default.
