Curriculum vitae Prof. Dr. Ir. Nico H.G. Baken,
Professional: Professor Baken had a part-time chair since 2001 till 2018 in the Telecommunications Department at Delft University of Technology alongside his primary position as Visionary and Senior Strategist within the CTO-office of the Royal KPN, the Dutch incumbent Telecom operator in the Netherlands. Since September 2017 he is a part-time professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology at three faculties. His interest transcends Broadband Networks and Services, dealing with a broad spectrum of domains such as Sensors, Vehicle, Home and the first mile , e.g. FTTH, other access technologies, but also comprises the introduction of “the Value-case” to replace the concept of the business-case. He introduced new concepts such as trans-sector innovation and Streetlight for Smart Cities to enhance and accelerate ict-applications in and across sectors such as healthcare, transport, construction and education. In 2009, he was invited to speak on TEDx Amsterdam and introduced the concept of Holons and Holarchies. Lately, he is strongly involved with innovative concepts in the sector of construction: Woonconnect, a basis for a new paradigm: The Connected Society both for Smart Cities and Smart Rural Regions.
Nico Baken was born on the 2nd of July 1955 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He finished Gymnasium β in '73 and graduated, cum laude, in mathematics at Eindhoven University of Technology in 1981. He published over 100 papers, holds several patents and won several prizes for his scientific work, e.g. the Doctor Neher Laboratory prize for the most outstanding researcher. He received his Ph D from the Delft University of Technology at the department of Electrical Engineering, working with Professor Dr H. Blok and Professor Dr A.T. de Hoop; the thesis concerned Computational Modelling of Integrated Optical Waveguides and Circuits.
Private: Nico is married to the beautiful Charlotte van den Biggelaar, and has two fantastic sons: Peter-Pim and Jan-Joris.
