or ? I see the notation with the parentheses being used. Here is an example (e.g. on page 5) using

- That example is correct. Parentheses are needed to denote a field. Basically, X[s] means the ring with elements of the form and X(s) means the field with numerators in X[s] and denominators in X[s] \ {0}. Xs looks like the elements of X multiplied by s... a very different creature, and certainly not a field.
