Talk:Dirichlet beta function
About
The reason I've been categorizing article pages in a category with the same name is in case the A999999 sequence pages from the main OEIS get to be categorized again in OEIS Wiki, like they were at the beginning (that's when I started doing so). For example, the A999999 sequence pages related to the Dirichlet beta function could/would [eventually?] be categorized in , like was the case at the beginning. Should I stop doing so from now on? — Daniel Forgues 02:08, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Also, is currently categorized in
-
and could be further categorized in (I'm doing it right now!)
-

- I would stop creating categories with the same name as pages, yes. (Unless of course there are other pages which need to go in it!) Generally I think categories should be reserved for cases when there are at least 3-4 pages, so single-page categories are overkill.
- I would like to see categories for sequences, but that's unlikely to be a part of the wiki even if it happens. So I wouldn't predicate current practice on that unlikely eventuality.
- But general categories, like your Category:Special functions, are a good idea.

Main OEIS categories
- On an aside (to hijack the discussion!), I'd love to hear your ideas on a good categorization scheme for the sequences in the OEIS (regardless of whether on- or off-wiki). What sorts of things could we categorize? How would they nest? Etc. Charles R Greathouse IV 05:23, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
- There could be, I guess, a new section category containing a comma separated list of categories (after the keyword section?). The thing is, without category pages, I wonder how we could nest the categories like in the wiki. — Daniel Forgues 01:29, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
- Well, yes, something like that. Suppose that it were implemented somehow -- maybe clicking the category name takes you to a page listing the A-numbers of sequences in the category directly, as well as a list of all subcategories. Setting implementation issues aside, I'd like to think about what the categories should actually *be* to get reasonable coverage of the things we care about. I figured you'd be the go-to guy for that, since I know you've been thinking about this for years now.
- What kind of top-level categories would we want? What kinds of categories would go in those? Etc. Maybe it's worth making a project page for this just to gather ideas.

- In the wiki, the categories pages not only list pages and subcategories but also shows parent categories at the bottom, allowing upwards navigation. For the categories used in the main OEIS, we could either start from the original categories that were used to categorize the sequence pages at the beginning (before the sequence pages were pulled off the wiki) or start from the currently used categories in the wiki. Then some brainstorming could be done to decide from there (over deletions, modifications, additions of categories)... unless we decide to start from scratch? We may also investigate the 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC2010). — Daniel Forgues 01:03, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
- Should the project page for the main OEIS categories be created as Project:Main OEIS categories (i.e. OeisWiki:Main OEIS categories) in the OeisWiki namespace? — Daniel Forgues 01:21, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know if that is the 'right' place or not, but let's do it and worry about moving it later. I think this is important enough to get started. Charles R Greathouse IV 01:59, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
