Thomas Becker has a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He has held academic positions at Tulane University, the University of New Orleans, and the University of Passau (Germany), specializing in mathematical logic, algebra, and symbolic computation. He went on to pursue a career in scientific software development. Among other things, he was lead mathematician and scientific software developer at Zephyr Associates Inc. (since acquired by Informa Investment Services), where he designed, implemented and maintained the mathematical engine of the StyleADVISOR software. During his tenure at Zephyr, StyleADVISOR became the leading analytics platform for institutional investors, money managers, and financial advisors. Since then, Thomas has built a personal finance tool that is based on mathematical insight in the problem of money-weighted performance measurement (www.greaterthanzero.com). Prompted by questions from his non-mathematician friends about the mathematical underpinnings of random shuffle mode on their music players, he has recently dabbled in algorithm discovery and implementation regarding permutations with and without consecutive sequences (https://github.com/walkswiththebear/ConsecutiveSequences). His Erdös number is 2. More information, including a list of his academic publications, is available on his homepage at http://thbecker.net/professional/resume.html.
