Margaret Wertheim is a science writer, and founding director of the Institute For Figuring, an organization devoted to "enhancing public engagement with the poetic and aesthetic dimensions of science and mathematics." [See www.theiff.org] Wertheim is the co-creator of the "Crochet Coral Reef" project, the largest participatory art and mathematics endeavor in the world, in which thousands of people in a dozen countries are collectively crocheting coral reefs inspired by the fact that living reef organisms often grow naturally as hyperbolic surfaces - geometric structures that can easily modeled with crochet. [See www.crochetcoralreef.org] Wertheim regularly interviews mathematicians for the arts+culture journal Cabinet. Neil Sloan and the OEIS are the subject of her latest Cabinet article, currently in progress.
