Born 1945, studied mathematics at the Univ. of Vienna, Austria from 1963 to 1967 (PhD). Then assistant prof.at the Technical Univ. of Vienna, 1969-1970 research associate, Univ. of Arizona. Then assistant prof.at the Univ. of Linz, Austria, since 1974 associate professor, since 1997 full professor. One-semester-stays at the Univ. of Southw. Louisiana (1983), Texas A&M Univ. (1984), longer stays (more than a month) at the universities in Hobart (Tasmania), Tainan, Taiwan (Cheng Kung), Zibo, China (Shandong Univ. of Technology), etc. 2003 honorary doctorate from the Ural State University in Ekaterinburg, Russia. Algebraist; about 70 papers in refereed journals. Books: "Near-rings" (North Holland), "Applied Abstract Algebra" (with R. Lidl), Springer, "The Concise Handbook of Algebra" (with A.V.Mikhalev), Kluwers, and several more. Editor-in-Chief of "Mathematica Pannonica". 2000-2007 vice rector for research at the Univ. of Linz. Often dept. head, organiser of several conferences.
