A hypothesis is an unproved conjecture used in a conditional proof.

The most famous hypothesis is undoubtedly the Riemann hypothesis, since it used in so many conditional proofs in analytic number theory, although the Riemann hypothesis is actually a conjecture of Bernhard Riemann (since 1859!)
