Help:Interwiki linking

From OeisWiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Some known interwiki links are not supported in the OEIS Wiki. Instead of, say purlnet:xyzzy/eis, use an ordinary external link xyzzy/eis. The default wikipedia:OEIS or OEIS on wikipedia interwiki links are rendered as wikipedia:OEIS or OEIS on wikipedia, respectively.

Examples

    • Use webcam to get webcam
    • Use OEIS:webcam to get webcam (note added "|" character for this shorthand)
    • Alternatively, use webcam to get webcam
    • Use WebCam to get WebCam as on the OEIS pages
    • Alternatively, use webcam to get WebCam as on the OEIS pages
    • Use mediawikiwiki:Project:About to get Project:About (MediaWiki Wiki about page)
    • Alternatively, use Project:About to get Project:About
    • In imported pages try to replace mw:whatever by mediawikiwiki:whatever
    • Use metawikipedia:Project:About to get Project:About (Wikimedia Meta-Wiki about page)
    • Use metawikipedia:Meta:About_Meta to get Meta:About_Meta (ditto, specific namespace Meta)
    • Alternatively, use Project:About to get Project:About
    • Alternatively, use Project:About to get Project:About
    • In imported pages try to replace m:whatever by metawikipedia:whatever
    • Use wikipedia:Project:About to get Project:About (Wikipedia about page)
    • Alternatively, use Project:About to get Project:About
    • In imported pages try to replace w:whatever by wikipedia:whatever
    • In imported pages try to replace en:whatever by wikipedia:whatever
    • In imported pages try to replace fr:whatever by wikipedia:fr:whatever

For Wikipedias in other languages there is a working fr:Wikipedia example at the end of the next section.

Caveats

MediaWiki terminology: Talk:Main Page, Project:Project, or OeisWiki:About are not interwiki links, but pages in different namespaces of this Wiki. As you might guess, project pages in namespace 4 can be addressed by the general Project: or the specific OeisWiki: prefix.

Imports from a Wikipedia, e.g. templates, might contain links such as Wikipedia:Template messages rendered as Wikipedia:Template messages.  This broken link is not shown as red link, because it is interpreted as interwiki link to an article Template messages on en:Wikipedia, which doesn't exist — similar examples for existing articles could be worse.  If you import templates from en:Wikipedia make sure to replace all Wikipedia:whatever by wikipedia:Wikipedia:whatever. For the Template messages example this yields Wikipedia:Template messages; compare this with the incorrect link shown above. In imports from Meta the en: or w: interwiki links to Wikipedia:Template messages or Wikipedia:Template messages would be obviously wrong, and generally templates imported from other sources tend to be far simpler than convoluted en:Wikipedia solutions.

In imports from other Wikipedias, say fr:Wikipedia, try to replace their Wikipedia: namespace in wiki links by an interwiki link wikipedia:fr:Wikipedia:, e.g., wikipedia:fr:Wikipedia:About rendered as wikipedia:fr:Wikipedia:About — this could be improved to get the proper wikipedia:fr:Wikipédia:À_propos or a portable wikipedia:fr:Project:About.

A-numbers

Since September, 2011 sequences given by their A-number in plain text on OEISwiki pages are rendered as links, e.g., A012345 is automatically rendered as A012345. Of course the older styles of links to A-numbers still work. You could use templates such as 012345 or A012345 to create Interwiki links for OEIS:A012345 or title, respectively.

Caveat: Any #REDIRECT A012345, e.g., on a page A012345 trying to fix a A012345 "red link", fails miserably. The MediaWiki software does not anymore support Interwiki redirects, because that resulted in maintenance issues. The target page could not detect these links with What links here, the spammers found ways to abuse this feature, and it also was not efficient. You could create a "soft redirect"—this is an ordinary local landing page, e.g., A012345, with a polite invitation to click on an ordinary Interwiki link, e.g., OEIS:A012345.

For fans of graph theory: A #REDIRECT A012345 on a page A012345 would result in a double redirect, because the page redirects to itself when the erroneous OEIS: moniker is ignored.
