Since its creation, the OEIS Foundation OEISF.org has several times proposed various contests. In 2015, it introduces for the first time a monetary reward with the establishment of the John Riordan Prize. Submissions are open until December 1st, 2015, further details can be found on the John Riordan Prize.

Summary of the John Riordan Prize contest

Main article: John Riordan Prize

For the first time in 2015 the OEIS Foundation offers a prize of $1,000 for the solution to an open problem in the OEIS.

The prize is named after John Riordan (1903–1988; Bell Labs, 1926–1968), author of the classic books An Introduction to Combinatorial Analysis and Combinatorial Identities, which were the source for hundreds of early entries in the OEIS.

You are invited to find an open problem in an entry in the OEIS (https://oeis.org), solve it, get your solution accepted in the OEIS entry, and then notify Secretary@oeisf.org via an email with subject line “Riordan Prize Nomination”. You are encouraged to nominate your

The deadline for submission is December 1, 2015. The decision will be made by a special prize committee, and will be announced at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Seattle in.

To find problems to work on, search in the OEIS for the words “conjecture”, “empirical”, “evidence suggests”, “it would be nice”, “would like”, etc. Or find a formula or recurrence (with proof, of course) for a sequence that currently has no formula.

Further information can be found on the page 'John Riordan Prize.

OEIS banner contest

In the beginning of 2014 was announced a contest for proposing a new logo and banner for the OEIS.org web site. All details, proposals and results can be found on New_OEIS_Banner#About_the_contest.

(was there a contest of that form?)

January 2013 contest

From Tony Noe's email of Nov. 19, 2012:

The AMS/MAA conference, billed as the largest Mathematical meeting in the world, takes place January 9-12, 2013 in San Diego, California. OEIS will have a booth there, near the coffee table. Neil Sloane and a lot of OEIS people will be there. For more information see http://jointmathematicsmeetings.org/jmm

A competition for the best new sequence. Prize: a signed copy of N. J. A. Sloane's 1973 book "A Handbook of Integer Sequences". There will be _at least_ three winners.

Rules: Anyone can submit _one_ sequence for consideration. The author's name will be removed from the sequence. The author should indicate that the sequence should be considered by making "CONTEST" the sequence's first comment. The sequence should be short: when printed, the sequence should take no more than 30 lines of text. We encourage using the comments, references, links, programs, and Cf fields. The sequences will be judged by conference attendees. The winning sequences will receive the "nice" keyword.

Please submit your entry on or slightly before Monday January 7, 2013.
